Information on Broken Circle/Spiral Hill

Broken Circle/Spiral Hill is the only Land Art work by Robert Smithson in Europe. It was made in 1971 within the framework of the event 'Sonsbeek beyond lawn and order'

Plans exists to build a visitors centre to make the work more accessible, but it is currently only open for visits during work hours and in the weekend on a number of sundays.

During the visit you can view an exhibition room and afterwards you can follow a walk through the quarry to the artwork Broken Circle/Spiral Hill.

Instructions for a visit to Broken Circle/Spiral Hill

The work can be viewed from Monday to Friday from 08:00hrs until 16:00hrs. Visitors should report to the office at Emmerhoutstraat which is next door to number 138.

In 2012 the work can be visited on Sundays from 13:00 hrs until 16:00 hrs during the following period: from April 1 2012 to July 15 2012, except on Sunday, May 20. Visitors should than report at the entrance on Emmerhoutstraat 150.

Children under sixteen years only have access to the quarry if accompanied by an adult.

During the holiday seasons from June to August and from December to January the quarry can be closed. We advise you to first contact us, during these periods, by telephone or e-mail.
